Broadway superstar Audra McDonald will headline Dominican University's 33rd Annual Trustee Benefit Concert and Gala on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 5 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium.

McDonald, the record-tying five-time Tony Award winner has lent her luminous soprano to some of Broadway's biggest shows, including Carousel, Ragtime and the acclaimed 2011 revival of The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, which ended its run in September 2011. Equally powerful in dramatic roles, she received two of her Tony Awards for theatrical performances, in 1996 for Master Class, and in 2004 for A Raisin in the Sun.

Her acting also brought her into mainstream popularity with several prominent television roles, including star turns in two short-lived but acclaimed shows, NBC's Mr. Sterling and the WB's The Bedford Diaries. More recently, McDonald completed a four-season role as Dr. Naomi Bennett on ABC's Private Practice. She also recently was named host of the popular PBS concert series Live from Lincoln Center and announced an upcoming multi-episode role on CBS's hit show The Good Wifein addition to high-profile appearances on talk shows including the Colbert Report.

The Juilliard-trained McDonald has also won praise for her operatic performances, including with the Los Angeles Opera and the Houston Grand Opera. In addition, she has accompanied many of the world's top orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra.

McDonald returns to the solo stage for Dominican's Trustee Benefit Concert for a performance to include a mixed set of musical styles showcasing her broad repertoire.

During the concert intermission, the university will present James L. Alexander with its Bravo Award for significant contributions to the arts. Alexander, owner of the Alexander and Alexander law firm, has been a longtime supporter of the arts, having served on the boards of, among other organizations, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Harris Theater for Music and Dance and the Chicago Children’s Choir. He also is a co-trustee of the Elizabeth Morse and Elizabeth Morse Genius Charitable Trusts, which provide significant grants to promote arts, culture and the humanities in Chicago and Cook County.

The superb acoustics and classic ambience of the Lund Auditorium offer the perfect backdrop for a performer of McDonald's caliber. Concert tickets start at $25. Tickets to the gala, including the concert, cocktail reception and dinner, are $350. All proceeds benefit student scholarships at Dominican University.
