Dominican Students Put Children First with Jumpstart
by Benjamin J. Mueller
Jumpstart in Spencer Elementary
The Jumpstart organization at Dominican University would like to acknowledge and applaud the unwavering effort and commitment shown by five students over the course of the 2012-2013 academic year.

In January, a group of students began service in a preschool classroom at Spencer Elementary in the Austin Neighborhood of Chicago. The team of Dominican students completes 12-15 hours of classroom service each week by implementing Jumpstart's language and literacy curriculum.

In addition to spending significant time inside a preschool classroom, the team members have also completed more than 40 hours of training in early childhood education practices.

The Team Leader, Jaz'mun Brooks, has noticed substantial literacy growth in the preschool students since she began her service.

"When we first started our sessions, many of the students struggled to recognize their names on paper. Now, we have students identifying all the letters in their names, and they're beginning to sound out those letters as well."

Jumpstart at Dominican University aims to ensure that all preschool children enter kindergarten prepared to succeed. The Dominican team has worked extremely hard with the teachers at Spencer Academy to ensure that this goal will be met.
